Best view on BLACK! It is well known that landscape photography heavily relies on weather condition - most landscape photographers chase dramatic sunrise/sunset all the time. However, the ideal light or the "luck" doesn't always stand with us. Finding potential photography opportunities in bad weather requires careful observation, exploration and patience, while the reward from the nature can be amazing - a shot truly belongs to the photographer himself and conveys his own experience and vision. In that particular morning, I planned to shoot sunrise at the famous Second Beach in Olympic National Park. I woke up at 4:00 AM, 1.5 hours before sunrise, and sadly found it was raining. When I reached the beach, I realized that the "icon view" of this beach was totally "killed" by the weather as well as the tide level, and I also knew that the chance of dramatic sunrise was almost zero. I wandered along the beach, and was thinking whether I should return to the campground with zero photo captured. After a bit exploration, I found this little tide pool with two sea stars lying on the reef. I then set up my camera on the tripod, and framed the tide pool with sea stacks as background, since there is nothing else nearby worth a try. After I took the first test shoot, a strong ocean wave ran through me and left water swirling in the pool! What a present to the early bird! I was so excited and set the camera for long exposure. After a couple of test shoots, I found the sea stars were still too dark and the reef was in heavy blue cast. I utilized my head light to "paint" the sea stars and the reef to highlight the color and texture on the foreground, and was finally able to obtain this photo. The sunrise ended up with no warm light at all, but I was still happy with the result captured during the blue hour。 via 500px http://ift.tt/1vRDdsD
