The planet Mars on its travels through the Solar System passes through the central Milky Way region. Mars is seen below two molecular clouds known as the Lagoon (left) and Trifid (right). These star forming areas are over 4,000 light years away from the red planet. This photo provides a great perspective of distance, relative motion, and just simply being awesome! This image was produced from 10 x 10 minute exposures stacked and processed.
