Nature is amazing, beautiful, cruel but without interference...in balance. Harp seal pups have 12 days on the ice, being fed by the moms, after that they're on their own, and the circle of life enters a new stage for the adult females: mating season again. The pups stay on the ice for 5-6 more weeks, molt, are helpless and loose up to 50% of their bodyweight. Without human interference 30% of the pups will die, in years with bad ice those numbers go up way too high up to 70-90%... And still Canadian government issues a quota for the commercial seal hunt: 468.000 seals can be hunted in 2015, luckily because the demand for commercial products is down, the quota will not be met, but sadly 95% of the hunted seals are pups between 12-14 days and 3 months helpless, without energy, on the ice...
