The park belonged to the Spanish Monarchy until the late 19th century, when it became a public park. The gardens have originated between 1630 and 1640, when the Count-Duke of Olivares (Gaspar de Guzmán y Pimentel), favorite of Philip IV (1621-1665), the King gave him some land that had been ceded by the Duke of Fernan Nunez for the recreation of the Court about the Jeronimos Monastery in Madrid The Buen Retiro Park is the one of the largest parks of the city of Madrid, Spain.
