Yes, yes. This is one of the most iconic compositions from Ruby Beach... hell, even from most of Olympic National Park. But I just wanted to grab it real quick while out there with my friends Miles and Nagesh. It was a busy night on the beach with a mass transit of photographers, so I ended up having to clone out a few guys from the frame. This is also a stitch of two horizontal frames on top of each other to get the perspective I was after here. Also a couple shots for dynamic range. I've got a new video release I'm working on that covers some of this perspective blending stuff, as well as a few other types of perspective control techniques I use. There is also a BIG workshop announcement coming up for some epic international Aurora stuff that I'm super duper stoked on. Anyways, I recently released a tutorial video that covers some of the techniques I use in my processing (ones that were used in the making of this image). ++view on black and go full screen for this one++ This is my first ever attempt at a full milky way panoramic. It stretches from looking south toward Astoria, OR and the north to the most northern tip of the Long Beach Peninsula here in Washington. It's comprised of 9 vertically stitched photos, 18mm, ISO 3200, 20 seconds, f/2.8. This location has always held a special in my heart as my dad spent a great deal of time here as a child and kept the tradition alive with me. This photo is a special one not only because of the area it was taken in but also because I was able to shoot the stars with my dad and teach him how to photograph the milky way for his first time. This was a tough shot to pull off... both with composition and processing. It's a fairly extensive perspective blend that I had to utilize to get all the elements shaped up properly with the frame while overcoming the limitations of the natural elements and my own lens. It was all focus blended, blended for dynamic range, hand-stitched from different focal lengths, and then warped to get everything looking ship-shape again. After all of that it was pretty straight forward processing for me. Some texture work, some luminosity masking to get the tones proper across the board, and a bunch of dodging/burning (some of which is covered in my latest video tutorial). I'm currently working on my next video tutorial which will cover many of these perspective blend, warping, stitching techniques I use. It's pretty labor intensive work to put these together, but isn't necessarily *hard* to pull off. Spent some time at the Olympic Coast last week with some friends. Had a great time despite some of the woes.... -First night I had my backpack rummaged through by what I was sure was a bear... or Miles. Turns out, it was a coyote. I knew I should have put it in a safe place before crawling in my tent... but the one time I thought "screw it" was the time my bag got ransacked. -In a mad dash to grab a shot, Miles dropped a lens. The sound it made hitting the ground was loud enough to scare away any wildlife that was nearby. It was a circus of expletives the rest of the day. -Nagesh soaked his iphone in a creek crossing. Oddly, this meant his phone would not turn on, but the flashlight on the back would not turn off. We put it in rice... and that did nothing but make the rice taste like phone. It was a heavy traffic week on the Olympic coast, running into some guys I knew, and guys I'd yet to meet. Was great to see some friendly faces out there, but the crowds are a little bothersome to shoot in. We ended up having Rialto Beach nearly to ourselves one of the nights and spent a couple hours getting soaked in the surf. This is the second time I'd been to Panther Creek Falls in Washington. I was kind of bored shooting comps at the first drop where the water converges. I loved the challenge of crossing this stream waist-high to get an interesting perspective on this fall. I did a ninja like move to duck under a log, and all kinds of crazy stuff. Cedar Creek · Columbia River Gorge · North Bonneville · Washington · USA A little-traveled path nestled between Aldrich Butte and Cedar Mountain winds its way through a Douglas-fir forest before crossing over Cedar Creek and snaking through a stand of monstrous black cottonwoods. In the thick of spring, this trail is as lush and verdant as it gets, but on this late-March day the buds and sprouts were just barely rousing from their winter torpor--though a few modest flourishes of lavender oaks toothwort and yellow deep woods violet brought some refreshing color to the journey. Sparse foliage and harsh sunlight made photographing the creek's namesake falls an unworthy pursuit, so I spent some time downstream studying the picturesque outflow and waited for some high clouds to diffuse the sunlight before pulling the trigger on this charming little stretch of meander. via 500px http://ift.tt/1jkbg4q
